Ingredients
2 cups water
1/2 cup oatmeal
⅓ cup pumpkin puree
2-3 Tablespoons cocoa powder
1 Tablespoon maple syrup
½ teaspoon turmeric
pinch of salt
- optional
cinnamon, clove, ginger, or other spices
flaxseed for added anti-inflammatory properties
Directions
- In a blender, add just the oats and pulse until a flour-like consistency is formed. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until it is smooth and frothy.
- Pour the mixture over a sifter to discard of any unwanted clumps.
- Add the drink to a pot on a stovetop and heat on low-medium until it reaches the desired heat. Alternatively, you can also heat the drink in a microwave.
- Pour into two mugs and top with whatever you choose. I recommend dark chocolate shavings, this coconut milk whipped cream, and this chocolate syrup made from maple syrup.
Notes
- The addition of oats to this drink not only contributes anti-inflammatory properties, but it compensates for the processed store-bought milks that are often used in vegan drinks. Plus, it results in a frothy consistency. Of course, if you don’t have oats, dairy-free milk can be subbed for the water and oats.
- Pumpkin purée can be freshly made for optimal flavor, but I often used canned pumpkin and it turns out nicely.
- Pumpkin purée may be subbed for mashed sweet potato.
- You can easily morph this hot chocolate into a quick and filling shake by adding one or two frozen bananas.
